Transforming Lives: A Golden Little Star Success Story

At Golden Little Star, a Human Service Organization partner of Access East and the Healthy Opportunities Pilot Program, we take pride in transforming the lives of our participants through comprehensive housing case management services.

Our goal is to provide stable, long-term housing solutions that cater to the unique needs of each individual we serve. Today, we are excited to share a remarkable success story that highlights the impact of our services on a participant's life and well-being.


The Challenge

When we first met our participants, their living conditions were far from ideal. The bathroom was plagued with mold-infested carpet, and the bedroom and bathroom subfloors were severely damaged due to water and wear, creating unsafe living conditions. Additionally, one of the participants, a wheelchair user, faced significant challenges in accessing their home, which was not wheelchair-friendly.

Our Comprehensive Services

To address these challenges, Golden Little Star sprang into action, offering a suite of services tailored to meet the participant’s needs:

  1. Housing Navigation, Support & Sustaining Services: Our team worked closely with the participant to identify their housing preferences and develop a robust housing support plan. We also provided educational services and ongoing support to enhance their independent living skills, ensuring they could maintain stable, long-term housing.

  2. Inspection for Housing Safety & Quality: Our lead case manager, Kiara, conducted a thorough housing safety and quality inspection to identify potential home-based health and safety risks, ensuring the living environment was safe and habitable.

  3. Home Remediation Services: Based on the inspection results, we coordinated and furnished evidence-based home remediation services to eliminate the identified health and safety risks. This included addressing the mold issue in the bathroom and repairing the damaged subfloors.

  4. Home Accessibility and Safety Modifications: To improve accessibility and safety, we installed a wheelchair ramp, allowing the participant to access their home with ease.

  5. Essential Utility Set-Up: Our team also assisted the participant in setting up essential utilities and resolving any arrears related to unpaid utility bills, ensuring their home was fully equipped for comfortable living.
